Society for Ecumenical Studies: Selly Oak Ecumenical Initiative for Study and Action, November 2002

Autumn Conference 2002
The WCC and the Orthodox Churches

Saturday 9 November 2002

at the Selly Oak Initiative for Ecumenical Study and Action,
United College of the Ascension, Selly Oak, Birmingham

There were two main sessions. The first was devoted to the future direction of ecumenism. This included a report on the thoroughgoing review at the World Council of Churches, which has been brought into focus by the 'Special Commission on Orthodox Participation in the WCC'. Click here to read Dr Mary Tanner's speech on this. There was also a report on Methodist perspective on ecumenism, reflecting too upon the experience of moves for an ecumenical bishop in Wales and current Anglican-Methodist discussions in England. The international Roman Catholic-Methodist dialogue is now beginning its eighth quinquennium - this time on ecclesiology. We are delighted to record the fact that two of our members, the Revd Dr Paul MacPartlan and the Revd David Chapman, have been newly appointed members of this international commission.

The second session looked at ecumenical experiences and schemes in an English LEP, Kenya and the Church of South India.

Also at this conference was launched the Selly Oak Ecumenical Initiative for Study and Action. Click here to see the Order for the Inaugural Eucharist.
